According to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area, the San Francisco 49ers have signed former Las Vegas offensive coordinator Mick Lombardi to an unnamed role on the offensive staff. Lombardi’s NFL career began while working under Jim Harbaugh as the San Francisco 49ers’ head coach. The last person Lombardi worked for before being fired in Las Vegas was Josh McDaniels.

The History of the San Francisco 49ers With Mick Lombardi
In 2013, Mick Lombardi served as an offensive assistant for Jim Harbaugh before beginning his career as a coach. He remained after Jim Tomsula fired Jim Harbaugh as head coach during his turbulent stint. Working with Tomsula, he was an assistant on defense. In 2016, Chip Kelly kept him on as a defensive quality control coach. Lombardi’s NFL coaching career got off to an intriguing start, and he plans to drastically alter the appearance of his current stint.
The Things Mick Lombardi Offers
The most experience serving on the attacking side of the ball belongs to Lombardi. Last season, Lombardi’s offense as the offensive coordinator in Las Vegas finished 31st in yards per game and 21st in passing yards per game. Despite having the position of offensive coordinator, Josh McDaniels was responsible for calling plays; Lombardi was not.

Lombardi offers a wealth of expertise to the San Francisco 49ers offense, having traveled the league and studied several systems of thought. Unlike his prior coaching assignments, which required him to shoulder a hefty load, the 49ers will not rely on Lombardi to do that. Lombardi should find this to be a breath of fresh air as it will allow him to stand back and concentrate on the facets of the 49ers offense with which he is most comfortable. With the 49ers, Lombardi should be able to revitalize his career while gaining knowledge from one of the league’s top play-callers, Kyle Shanahan.
