Rhys Walsh, Sunderland’s deadline-day acquisition from Glentoran, talks about his goals for his first squad
On the day of the transfer deadline, Sunderland finalized the signing of Glentoran winger Rhys Walsh for an unknown price in addition to the two players that made headlines—Ramie Mundle and Callum Styles.
After Walsh went on trial with Sunderland the previous summer, the club decided at the last minute to finalize his transfer now rather than wait until the summer, citing interest from other parties.
Walsh, who agreed to a two-and-a-half-year contract, stated in an interview with the Belfast Telegraph that Stoke City had also offered him a trial, but he was only interested in joining one team:
Last summer, I went to Sunderland on trial, and I had a great time. I knew I wanted to join the club after we maintained in touch.
I managed to secure a flight over on the day of the deadline, and I signed up for them.
Even though I was on trial at Stoke City, my thoughts were constantly on Sunderland. I only wanted to go to one club, and they were interested in me, but other clubs expressed interest as well.
The fact that I completed it during the transfer time was a huge relief, and I recognize the significant opportunity it presents for me.
Things have advanced swiftly. Although I didn’t expect it would, the clubs were always in communication with one another.
We had a flight at 8:00 p.m. on the day of the transfer deadline, so it was last-minute work. I received the call on that day.
Walsh, who is just 17 years old, is already planning on breaking into the starting lineup:
The goal is to advance to the first team by first playing for the Under-21 team. My goal is to get better as much as I can.
I’m happy with how swiftly my career has advanced.
Trai Hume and I have discussed the transfer; we have the same agency. He is doing incredibly well, and maybe I can do the same.
Dan Ballard and Corry Evans are both performing admirably at Sunderland.
Top athletes from Northern Ireland, like as Conor Bradley and Callum Marshall, are demonstrating this to the rest of the globe.
I believe I’ll adjust rather nicely. I’ve proven myself on the Glentoran first team, and I plan to do the same at Sunderland.
