For years, even decades, the idea of LSU gymnastics clinching a national championship felt like a distant dream—a star on the horizon, visible but seemingly out of reach.

Starting from modest beginnings—early meets held in venues like the Carl Maddox Field House or the Pete Maravich Assembly Center, sometimes with a purple curtain drawn to conceal empty seats—the program struggled to gain traction while powerhouses like Alabama, Georgia, and Utah thrived.

Over time, LSU’s gymnastics program flourished, drawing large crowds and consistently reaching the national stage. Yet, despite their success, they endured the heartbreak of coming close to victory, only to watch the championship slip through their grasp, often to perennial contenders like Oklahoma.

But this year felt different, though with a hint of familiarity. LSU arrived in Fort Worth, Texas, among the nation’s top teams but still seen as the underdog compared to perennial powerhouse Oklahoma—echoing the narrative of LSU’s women’s basketball team at last year’s Women’s Final Four in Dallas.
