Sidney Crosby, the captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins, achieved a remarkable milestone on Monday night, matching Wayne Gretzky’s record. At 36 years old, Crosby secured his 82nd point of the season with three points in a decisive 5-2 victory against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden. This achievement ensured that Crosby maintained a point-per-game average for the 19th consecutive season, a feat previously accomplished only by Gretzky.

In the game against the Rangers, Crosby made significant contributions, earning a primary assist on Bryan Rust’s early goal and later deflecting a shot by P.O Joseph into the net. His empty-net goal sealed the victory and solidified his remarkable record.

Despite a challenging season for the Penguins, Crosby’s exceptional performance stands out. The team, under new management led by president of hockey operations/GM Kyle Dubas, has faced struggles in the playoff race. Nevertheless, Crosby’s consistent excellence has been a beacon of hope for the team.

With 37 goals this season, Crosby has also set a franchise record for the Penguins with his 12th 30-goal season. Additionally, he has surpassed the 80-point mark for the 13th time in his career, joining an elite group of players.

Looking ahead, Crosby aims to join the select few players who have scored 40 goals at the age of 36 or older, further solidifying his status as one of the game’s greatest scorers. With an impressive career spanning 1264 games, Crosby continues to make his mark in NHL history, currently ranking as the all-time leading active scorer and trailing Phil Esposito by just six points for 10th place in NHL history.
