The Dallas Cowboys may part ways with Michael Gallup due to the rising prominence of Jalen Tolbert in the team’s offense. Tolbert’s significant improvement during training camp earned him a more substantial role in Mike McCarthy’s “Texas Coast Offense.”

Tolbert’s increased snap count, going from 89 to 477, showcased his development, often leading to him taking some of Gallup’s offensive snaps due to Gallup’s lackluster performance. In his second season, Tolbert demonstrated progress with 268 receiving yards and two touchdowns from 22 receptions, a notable improvement from his rookie year. Conversely, Gallup struggled, managing only 418 receiving yards and two touchdowns from 34 receptions, failing to match his 2019 form.

Gallup’s declining stats and his $13.8 million cap hit for the next year, coupled with Tolbert’s emergence on a more economical contract (a $1.1 million base salary in 2024 and a $1.4 million cap hit), may prompt the Cowboys to consider moving on from Gallup. The team could potentially designate him as a post-June 1 cut to ease the salary cap impact and gain $9.5 million in cap space.

While Gallup has been a positive presence in the locker room and a team player, the financial considerations, along with Tolbert’s comparable production at a lower cost, may influence the decision. Despite Gallup’s 150 more yards and 12 additional receptions, Tolbert boasts a similar yards per reception, a better catch rate, and only averages nine fewer yards per game. The stark difference in salaries could become the deciding factor, suggesting that Gallup’s tenure as a Cowboy in 2024 is uncertain.
