BREAKING NEWS: The Green Bay Packers, sack Joe Barry

The Green Bay Packers have made a coaching staff change, announcing on Wednesday that defensive coordinator Joe Barry will not be returning for the 2024 season after three years in the position.

During the past season, the Packers’ defense performed at a mediocre level, allowing an average of 335.1 yards and 20.6 points per game. Notably, the team struggled against the run, ranking 28th in the league with an average of 128.3 yards allowed. The team’s inconsistent performance throughout the season raised questions about Barry’s future. When asked about it during the season-ending press conference on Monday, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur was non-committal, stating that the evaluation process was just beginning.

“I know there’s going to be a lot of long-term, big-picture questions. I’m not there yet, fellas,” LaFleur mentioned. “We’re just starting the process… So probably not going to have many answers for you guys. Haven’t met with any of our coaches yet. That’ll start this afternoon. Certainly meet with the coordinators and then go down with all the position coaches.”

Joe Barry, a veteran NFL assistant coach since 2000, has had coaching stints with various teams, including the San Francisco 49ers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Detroit Lions, Los Angeles Chargers, Washington Commanders, and Los Angeles Rams.

Now, with Barry no longer in the role, Coach LaFleur is set to initiate the search for a new defensive coordinator as the Packers aim for another playoff run in 2024.
