Over the weekend, the Los Angeles Rams interviewed longtime NFL head coach Ron Rivera for the potential role of defensive coordinator, considering him as a replacement for Raheem Morris, who recently accepted the head coach position with the Atlanta Falcons. The Philadelphia Eagles have also shown interest in Rivera, according to the initial report by Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports.

Rivera, recently let go by the Washington Commanders after a four-season stint with a record of 26-40-1, provided stability during the Commanders’ challenging recent seasons. Rams’ head coach Sean McVay tends to explore external candidates for key coordinator positions, and Rivera’s profile aligns with McVay’s initial choice for defensive coordinator, Wade Phillips.

After the dismissal of Jack Del Rio in Week 12, Rivera temporarily took on the role of defensive coordinator for the Commanders and expressed enjoyment in returning to those duties. Rivera previously served as the head coach of the Carolina Panthers from 2011 to 2019, leading the team to a Super Bowl appearance in 2015.

Rivera’s most recent experience as a defensive coordinator was from 2008 to 2010 with the then-San Diego Chargers and from 2004 to 2006 with the Chicago Bears, showcasing his ability to transform defenses into top-performing units.

A California native, Rivera originates from Fort Ord in the Monterey Bay area, and he attended UC Berkeley before being drafted by the Chicago Bears.
