Atlanta Falcons tight end Jonnu Smith runs after a reception during an NFL game against the Carolina Panthers

In 2023, the Miami Dolphins boasted the NFL’s top passing offense, led by quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who racked up an impressive 4,624 yards through the air. Despite this aerial prowess, Miami’s tight ends contributed just 414 yards without scoring a single touchdown on their 41 receptions.

Looking to bolster their tight end corps, the Dolphins made a significant addition by signing Jonnu Smith, formerly of the Atlanta Falcons. Smith, who posted 50 receptions for 582 yards and three touchdowns in 2023, became available after the Falcons released him on Feb. 28 to free up $6.5 million in cap space for the 2024 season.

Smith’s arrival in Miami comes on a two-year contract potentially worth up to $10 million, as reported by the Miami Herald and ESPN. Durham Smythe, who recorded 35 receptions for 366 yards in 2023, remains the Dolphins’ top returning tight end. During Tagovailoa’s stellar season, Mike Gesicki led the tight end group with 122 receptions for 1,271 yards and two touchdowns in 2021. However, in 2022, under coach Mike McDaniels, Miami’s tight ends managed 47 receptions for 491 yards and six touchdowns.
