On Monday, the New York Yankees secured left-handed reliever Matt Gage off waivers from the Houston Astros. To make room for Gage on the 40-man roster, the team designated infielder/outfielder Diego Castillo for assignment. Gage, set to celebrate his 31st birthday in February, made his MLB debut in 2022 with the Toronto Blue Jays and later featured in five games for the Astros last season, amassing a 2.70 ERA. Across his 16-game MLB career, Gage holds an 0-1 record, experienced one blown save, and maintains a 1.83 ERA with 20 strikeouts over 19 2/3 innings.

Before reaching the majors, he spent multiple seasons in both affiliated and independent minor league baseball. During his tenure at Triple-A Sugar Land in 2023, Gage recorded a 1-1 record with a 4.58 ERA and 39 strikeouts in 37 1/3 innings. In a recent move, the Yankees had claimed 26-year-old Castillo off waivers from the New York Mets. Castillo played 96 games for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2022 and one for the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2023.
