A fresh left-handed option has been added to the San Diego Padres bullpen. According to Ken Rosenthal, the Padres and veteran reliever Wandy Peralta have reached an agreement on a four-year, $16.5 million contract. There are three opt-outs in this arrangement.

After playing with the New York Yankees for three seasons, 32-year-old Peralta has joined the Padres. Throughout his time with the Yankees, he was excellent and established himself as one of the team’s most reliable pitchers.

In 165 games with the Yankees, Peralta recorded a 2.82 ERA, to go along with his 10-9 record that included 32 holds and 11 saves. The previous season, he appeared in 63 games and finished with a 2.83 ERA with 51 strikeouts. In 2023, he led the Yankees with 18 holds and made four saves out of seven chances.

When Peralta was grabbed off waivers by the San Francisco Giants late in the 2019 season, his career took a positive turn after he struggled for the most of his first four seasons in the Major League Baseball with the Cincinnati Reds.

It’s hard to find a replacement for a player of Josh Hader’s caliber. Given their payroll situation entering the offseason, the Padres likely forecasted that they would lose their All-Star closer in MLB free agency.

That is precisely what transpired when Hader earlier this month inked a five-year, $95 million contract with the Houston Astros.

Given that, San Diego has made most of its moves this winter involving pitchers. Pitchers make up four of the five players the Padres obtained from the Yankees in exchange for Juan Soto. To strengthen the bullpen, the Padres also signed renowned Korean reliever Woo Suk Go and five-time NPB All-Star reliever Yuki Matsui.

Although the Padres bullpen ERA was 10th last season, inconsistent play hindered San Diego’s prospects of making the playoffs. There’s no doubting AJ Preller and team are working to ensure the bullpen isn’t the reason for a Padres collapse in 2024, even though it might not be the most pressing issue facing San Diego.
