At the end of January, French outlet Foot Mercato reported that West Bromwich Albion and Bristol City were interested in signing Brahima Diarra, along with an unnamed Ligue One club and ten other Championship teams.

The latest update comes from Huddersfield Town’s announcement of their retained list last week, following their relegation from the Championship. Huddersfield decided to release five players with first-team appearances, including Diarra, Jordan Rhodes, Yuta Nakayama, Connor Mahoney, and Aaron Rowe.

Despite Diarra leaving on a free transfer, Huddersfield noted they would receive compensation for their role in his development. Diarra joined Huddersfield as a teenager from AC Boulogne-Billancourt in the summer of 2019.

The 20-year-old featured in 23 matches across all competitions this season, including 21 in the Championship. The five-time Mali under-23 international was primarily used as a substitute, making five league starts and providing two assists this season. Diarra last played competitively on February 24 as a three-minute substitute in a win against Watford and did not feature in any matchday squads for the final six games of Huddersfield’s campaign.

Huddersfield recently appointed Michael Duff, formerly of Barnsley, Cheltenham Town, and Swansea City, giving him the opportunity to assemble his own squad.
