Broncos Sign Emerging Young Gun While NRL Rivals Target Key Players
The Brisbane Broncos have made a significant move by securing promising Dolphins player Latrell Siegwalt, a standout in the Hostplus Cup and considered one of the league’s brightest prospects. At just 23 years old, Siegwalt has signed a train-and-trial contract with Brisbane for the upcoming pre-season, following an impressive season leading up to the grand final against Norths. This versatile player has made a name for himself as both a five-eighth and fullback and is currently in contention for the reserve grade’s rookie of the year.
Siegwalt is eager to demonstrate his skills during the pre-season, aiming to earn a full-time NRL contract. He is stepping in for the injured Trai Fuller in the Queensland Cup final, a testament to his rising profile. Redcliffe coach Ben Te’o expressed his pride in Siegwalt’s progress throughout the 2024 season, noting how the young talent has thrived after overcoming initial homesickness. Te’o highlighted Siegwalt’s exceptional performance metrics, stating that the player has not yet undergone a full pre-season, indicating even greater potential for growth.
In addition to Siegwalt’s signing, the Dolphins face uncertainty with cult hero Valynce Te Whare, who is expected to be without a club after the season. Te’o, who has coached Te Whare, believes the 24-year-old possesses unique skills that could benefit an NRL team. Despite a challenging 2024 season where he was forced to train individually, Te Whare has played a crucial role in Redcliffe’s success in the Queensland Cup. Te’o emphasized that Te Whare’s athleticism and talent deserve another chance in the NRL, arguing that it would be a mistake for clubs to overlook him.
The Broncos are also under pressure to secure a contract extension for star centre Selwyn Cobbo. With the deadline looming, Cobbo is set to enter the open market come November 1 if a deal isn’t finalized soon. While the 22-year-old has expressed a desire to remain with Brisbane, he has drawn interest from various clubs due to his ability to play multiple positions. The Broncos, confident in retaining Cobbo, are also working on extending contracts for other key players like Reece Walsh and Kotoni Staggs, all while navigating salary cap challenges.
Additionally, young talent Josiah Karapani has emerged as a potential target for the Canterbury Bulldogs. With his contract expiring at the end of the 2024 season, Karapani, who made his NRL debut this year, finds his future uncertain at the Broncos due to competition for spots. The Bulldogs are keen to bolster their outside backs and see Karapani as a valuable addition, especially with changes in their roster. With his impressive stats from the 2024 season, including high averages in running metres and tackles, Karapani could play a pivotal role in any team he joins.
