BYU Quarterback’s Bold Alamo Bowl Declaration Misses the Mark

Published

on

BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff sparked controversy during a pre-game press conference for the 2024 Valero Alamo Bowl, calling the matchup against Colorado the “people’s Big 12 Championship.” While the comment might have been made in jest, it reflects a misunderstanding—or perhaps deliberate disregard—of how conference championships are determined.

The Reality of the Big 12 Standings

The Big 12 Championship was decided on December 7, when Arizona State defeated Iowa State to secure their place in the College Football Playoff. Both BYU and Colorado finished third and fourth in the standings, respectively, falling short of the title game due to late-season losses.

BYU, in particular, dropped two of its final three games, including a heartbreaking 28-23 defeat to eventual champions Arizona State. These losses eliminated any realistic chance of claiming a conference title.

Retzlaff’s “People’s Championship” Claim

Retzlaff’s comment, labeling the Alamo Bowl as the true championship game, has drawn criticism for its tone and timing. While the quarterback has enjoyed a strong season, his statement comes across as sour grapes given BYU’s late-season struggles. Instead of focusing on what might have been, Retzlaff and the Cougars should be embracing the opportunity to face Colorado in what is still a high-profile bowl game.

Context Matters

The Alamo Bowl is unique this year because both teams, BYU and Colorado, are technically Big 12 members despite Colorado’s legacy affiliation with the Pac-12 bowl tie-in. This oddity has created a rare same-conference postseason matchup. However, that quirk doesn’t change the fact that neither team has a claim to the Big 12 title.

Time to Move Forward

For BYU and Retzlaff, the focus should shift to what’s ahead: a chance to finish the season on a high note against a ranked opponent. The Alamo Bowl offers both teams an opportunity to showcase their programs on a national stage, a reward for an otherwise solid season.

As entertaining as Retzlaff’s comments may be for headlines, they ultimately detract from what could be an exciting and competitive game. A bowl victory, not a misguided claim to a nonexistent title, should be the priority for the Cougars.

The Alamo Bowl may not crown a conference champion, but it remains a battle between two proud programs eager to make a statement—on the field, not in the press.
