Caixinha, a signing that cost Rangers £750k per goal, ruined the team.

Under Michael Beale’s leadership at Ibrox, Glasgow Rangers made some bad acquisitions during the summer transfer window of the previous year.

Large quantities of money were spent on players like Sam Lammers and Cyriel Dessers, but only one of them has been sent out on loan and the other has squandered 20 crucial opportunities in the Premiership this season.

Positive additions made by Philippe Clement in January should, ideally, portend good things ahead for the 49-year-old going forward.

Dessers and Lammers haven’t been great, but have they been any worse than any of Pedro Caixinha’s acquisitions during his tenure as the Light Blues’ manager? Among them is Eduardo Herrera.

In the summer of 2017.

was an odd moment to be a Rangers fan. Although the team finished third in the league behind Celtic and Aberdeen, they had already been promoted the year before.

Caixinha took over with the goal of winning the league, but the Ibrox team was far from reaching that goal—especially with the players he brought in.

Prior to the 2017–18 season, a rather varied group of new players were added, including Ryan Jack, Bruno Alves, Carlos Pena, and Dalcio.

Herrera cost the Gers £1.5 million to sign, and given their current financial position, it might not have been the wisest decision to spend so much money on a player who had only ever played in Mexico.

The team needed another center forward to strengthen the lineup despite the astronomical expense, and if

Herrera was able to win over the supporters right away and establish a rapport with them.

The Mexican was not just expensive, but he was also being paid £20,000 a week by the team, so there was immediate pressure to perform well. That weekly pay is a lot higher than Abdallah Sima’s £8.5k, to put it in perspective. It goes beyond Kieran Dowell (£16k) and Nicolas Raskin (£19k).

In just his third game with the Gers, he scored his first league goal. A few weeks later, he netted and added an assist in a League Cup encounter against Partick Thistle.

But for Herrera, this was to be his last decent performance as he went on to make 19 more scoreless appearances for

the club from September till the season’s conclusion.

Although he had a contract with the Liverpudlian team until 2020, Steven Gerrard was transferred on loan to Santos Laguna after being named the new manager ahead of the 2018–19 campaign.

In January of that year, his contract was dissolved and he joined Puebla FC, meaning his future was finally resolved.

Herrera cost the Glasgow team £750k per goal and managed just two goals overall in 24 games for the team. This was a bad return on investment.

The former Mexico international proved how bad he truly was by scoring just 18 goals for various clubs between leaving Rangers and retiring in 2022.

Fortunately, the Germans are in a different period today and may look forward to the future hoping the manager will bring in some very interesting players who can be sold for a significant profit in addition to their ability to contribute successfully.
