After receiving medical attention for a twisted ankle he sustained in the first game after only two games, Alcaraz broke Monteiro’s serve. However, when the Brazilian leveled the score, he shook his opponent’s hand and walked off the court, raising concerns from his coach Juan Carlos Ferrero.
Due to a right ankle injury, two-time major winner Carlos Alcaraz had to leave the Rio Open on Tuesday after just two games.

Thiago Monteiro of Brazil progressed to face fellow countryman Felipe Meligeni Alves for a spot in the quarterfinals after the retirement at 1-1.

After receiving medical care after twisting his ankle in the first game after just two points, Alcaraz broke Monteiro’s serve. However, as the Brazilian leveled the score, Alcaraz shook his opponent’s hand and walked off the court, raising an eyebrow at his coach Juan Carlos Ferrero.

According to the Spaniard’s medics, the damage was not considered critical.
“These things happen, even more so on clay,” stated the No. 2 seed in the world, who finished second here in 2022 and third last year. “I was hurt when I changed directions, so it wasn’t a legal issue. That takes place on this type of surface.

The 20-year-old Alcaraz added that on Wednesday, he will have medical scans and that he does experience pain when walking.

After playing against Alcaraz for such a short period of time, Monteiro stated it was an odd experience.

“It didn’t seem that serious on the court, but when I watched it on the big screen, it was a terrible turn of events. He is a star and a dominant figure in the next generation, so I can only support him in his recovery,” the Brazilian remarked.

Earlier, Argentina’s Facundo Díaz Acosta defeated Stan Wawrinka 7-5, 6-4 in the first round.
