With seven games left on their schedule, the Washington Capitals dropped out of the playoff picture after losing 4-1 to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday.

Even though the game was terrible overall, there was one good aspect. With his lone goal of the third period, Alex Ovechkin moved within 45 goals of Wayne Gretzky for a share of the NHL’s all-time goals record. It was his eighth career goal.

After a lengthy 5-on-3 and brief 5-on-4 power play, Ovechkin scored by beating Penguins goalie Alex Nedeljkovic with a cross-crease feed from Sonny Milano. Hendrix Lapierre and Milano both deserved the assists. With the goal, Ovechkin reached his career’s 1,545th point.

With 27 goals so far this season, Ovechkin is drawing near.
