Chelsea is reportedly in talks over a potential move for AS Roma’s goalkeeper, Mile Svilar, as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of the summer transfer window. Despite spending over $1.3 billion on signings in recent years, the Blues still lack world-class options in several key positions, including striker, wide attackers, defense, and, most notably, the goalkeeper role.
The goalkeeping situation at Stamford Bridge has been a major concern, with both Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen struggling to impress. Sanchez, in particular, has had a difficult season, making the most errors leading to goals in the Premier League. His poor distribution and decision-making have led to calls for Chelsea to bring in a more reliable shot-stopper. Jorgensen, signed in the summer, has also failed to convince, leaving the club searching for an upgrade.
Reports indicate that Chelsea has reached out to Svilar’s representatives to explore the possibility of a summer move. The 25-year-old Serbian international has been in fine form for Roma, keeping 11 clean sheets in 29 Serie A appearances, a significant improvement over Chelsea’s current options. His performances in the Europa League have also drawn attention, making him a strong candidate for a switch to the Premier League.
However, before making any new additions, Chelsea will need to offload some of their current goalkeepers. The club already has an overcrowded goalkeeping department, with Sanchez and Kepa Arrizabalaga on the books, as well as Mike Penders and Djordje Petrovic returning from loan spells. Petrovic, in particular, has been impressive at Strasbourg and could be given a chance as Chelsea’s first-choice keeper next season, with Jorgensen serving as backup.
While Svilar could be a solid addition, Chelsea may choose to prioritize internal options like Petrovic instead of spending more on another goalkeeper. Whether the Blues push ahead with a move for Svilar remains to be seen, but the club’s goalkeeping situation will undoubtedly be a key talking point in the upcoming transfer window.
