Veteran NRL player Clint Gutherson has opened up about his departure from the Parramatta Eels and his new chapter with the St. George Illawarra Dragons. Despite spending nine successful seasons with the Eels, including leading them to the 2022 NRL Grand Final, Gutherson insists there are “no hard feelings” about his exit. The 30-year-old fullback recently signed a three-year deal with the Dragons, embracing a fresh start and the challenges ahead.
Speaking candidly, Gutherson expressed gratitude for his time at Parramatta and the relationships he formed there. “Some of the people at the club are close friends I’ll always cherish,” he shared. Adjusting to his new surroundings, Gutherson wasted no time setting a high standard during pre-season training, winning a grueling fitness challenge on Mount Keira. “It’s about setting the standard,” he explained. “That’s why I’m here—to lead.”
The move has also sparked discussions about leadership at the Dragons, with Ben Hunt’s departure leaving the captaincy vacant. Although Gutherson hasn’t actively pursued the role, his on-field dedication and influence in training are already making an impression. Fellow recruit Damien Cook praised Gutherson’s tireless work ethic, describing him as “a great leader who leads by example.”
As the Dragons prepare for the 2025 season, Gutherson’s presence has raised questions about the future of young talent Tyrell Sloan, who has been the team’s fullback. Sloan is expected to shift to the wing, but Gutherson is committed to mentoring him. “I reached out to Tyrell as soon as I signed, letting him know I’m here to help him grow,” Gutherson said. “We’re already working closely, exchanging ideas, and finding ways to complement each other on the field.”
With Gutherson leading the charge and fostering a strong partnership with Sloan, the Dragons are poised for a transformative season. Fans can expect a renewed sense of leadership and camaraderie as the team aims to make a mark in 2025.
