The Miami Dolphins concluded their mandatory minicamp on Thursday, with Hawaii’s Tua Tagovailoa participating fully despite ongoing contract extension discussions. This week marked Tagovailoa’s first interaction with the Miami media this summer, during which he addressed various topics, including his offseason weight loss and negotiations with the Dolphins for a new agreement.

Tagovailoa, a native of Ewa Beach, is currently in the fifth year option of his rookie contract, set to earn just over $23 million for the upcoming season. While the possibility of entering free agency next year looms if a deal isn’t reached, Tagovailoa maintains a composed attitude, expressing confidence that discussions are progressing positively. Although he refrained from divulging specific details, Tagovailoa acknowledged the dynamic nature of quarterback salaries in the league, observing other quarterbacks signing lucrative contracts.

“One thing I can say is that the market is the market. If there wasn’t a market, none of this would really matter; it would just be an internal organizational matter. Whether someone else got paid a certain amount doesn’t affect us directly because it’s ultimately up to the organization. That’s how I see it, the market is the market.”

Despite ongoing discussions spanning several months, Tagovailoa remains optimistic that a deal will be reached before the start of next month’s training camp.

“I have confidence that we’ll reach an agreement, but ultimately, it’s not something I have control over.”

The Dolphins are set to commence their training camp in late July.
