‘Conversations Needed’: Trent Barrett Open to Reuniting with Jason Ryles at Parramatta

Trent Barrett has hinted at a possible reunion with Jason Ryles at the Eels next year, stating that “conversations” with the club will begin soon.

After being passed over for the head coaching role, Barrett’s future with the Eels is uncertain. Parramatta announced Ryles’ appointment on a four-year deal earlier this week, with Barrett narrowly missing out.

Now, attention shifts to whether Barrett will remain as an assistant coach under Ryles, leveraging their 25-year relationship that began during their playing days at St George Illawarra.

“It’s exciting for Jason – he’s worked really hard and it’s a good opportunity,” Barrett told the media on Thursday. “I’m happy for Rylesy, obviously I was disappointed, but that’s the game we’re in and I’ve been in it a long time.”

Barrett praised the club for their transparency throughout the process and mentioned that discussions about his future will happen in the coming weeks. Despite the challenges of this year, Barrett emphasized his commitment to preparing the team.

Barrett, who previously held head coaching positions at Manly and Canterbury, worked as an assistant at Penrith before joining the Eels under Brad Arthur. Despite internal support from players like Mitchell Moses and Clint Gutherson, the Eels chose to give Ryles his first major coaching role.

When asked about the need for a roster overhaul, Barrett highlighted the quality at Parramatta and noted that “luck” will play a key role in the team’s success under Ryles.

“I’m sure he’s got his own ideas on what he needs to do and I’m confident that he will do a good job,” Barrett said. “We’ve got a really good roster here… most of the players are here again next year. A little bit of luck would be nice and moving forward, he will do a really good job.”

Reflecting on his tenure, Barrett acknowledged the difficult circumstances and the disappointing results but expressed gratitude for the opportunity.
