Dak Prescott Gets Honest On What He’s Seeing From Trey Lance

After Brock Purdy emerged as an NFL starter last season, the Dallas Cowboys made a surprising trade with the rival San Francisco 49ers for quarterback Trey Lance. Lance has been out of options ever since.

The backup quarterback was acquired by the Cowboys in return for a fourth-round pick, so they didn’t give up much for Lance. However, it did raise questions about the trade’s logic given that star Dak Prescott is still arguably in his prime and may be close to signing a huge contract extension.
According to Jon Machota of The Athletic, Prescott was recently questioned about what he had observed from Lance at OTAs and seemed impressed with the young quarterback, even if he acknowledged that he was pushing him to improve as a quarterback.

I’m happy with where he’s at right now. He puts up a lot of effort,” stated Prescott. “He is exerting pressure on me.” Trey is the one I should keep an eye on as he’s attempting to overtake me in terms of reps. I don’t enjoy it when other people get more reps than me. That speaks volumes about him and the effort he is putting into this. I’ve witnessed it. He has improved. He’s got game.

At this point in time, it is uncertain what the future holds for Prescott in Dallas, as he could play out the final year of his deal with the team and head elsewhere in NFL free agency, which would hand the starting job to Lance unless the team brings in someone else.

Lance backing up Prescott will likely be a storyline throughout the 2024 campaign unless the team signs the veteran to a contract extension.
