Paul Sewald is edging closer to making a comeback. He participated in a simulated game at the Diamondbacks Spring Training complex in Scottsdale over the weekend. According to Manager Torey Lovullo, Sewald felt positive after the session, but they’re waiting to assess his condition the following day before deciding on the next steps. Lovullo suggested in a media session on Friday that Sewald could potentially return during the upcoming road trip. Sewald has been sidelined with a “low Grade 2” oblique strain since just before the regular season started.

Geraldo Perdomo, who has been recovering from meniscus surgery on his right knee, has been seen fielding ground balls at shortstop and throwing, but he hasn’t started hitting yet. Perdomo suffered a meniscus tear in his right knee on April 3rd and underwent surgery three weeks ago. The usual recovery time for this procedure is six to eight weeks, according to the Cleveland Clinic, indicating that Perdomo will likely be back in action towards the end of May.

During Perdomo’s absence, the team has struggled to find consistent value at the shortstop position. Blaze Alexander has shown promise at the plate with a .299 batting average, three home runs, and a .897 OPS. However, his defensive shortcomings have limited his playing time and overall contribution.

On the other hand, Kevin Newman has been reliable defensively but has struggled offensively, batting just .157 with two home runs and a .502 OPS. Together, they have only produced a combined 0.5 Wins Above Replacement (WAR) according to Baseball Reference. These shortcomings highlight why neither player was initially considered as the starting shortstop over Perdomo.
