Deion Sanders Sets Strict Rules as Colorado Prepares for Alamo Bowl

Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders has set a firm tone for his team ahead of their Alamo Bowl matchup in San Antonio. As the team settled into their hotel, Sanders wasted no time making his expectations clear, particularly about smoking.

In a video shared online, Sanders addressed his players, explicitly prohibiting any smoking during their stay. “If I smell smoke on any floor or if I hear someone is smoking, that will be your last puff,” he said firmly. Despite some laughter from the players, Sanders doubled down on his stance. “I’m serious—your last puff. If I smell smoke on your clothes at practice, at breakfast, anywhere, that’s it for you.” His unwavering tone left no room for misinterpretation.

This game carries significant weight for Sanders, marking his first Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) bowl appearance as Colorado’s head coach. The Buffaloes are also making their first bowl game appearance since 2020. However, it’s been nearly two decades since they last claimed a bowl victory—back in 2004 under then-coach Gary Barnett.

Adding to the high stakes, Colorado boasts two potential top-five NFL Draft picks: Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders. To safeguard their futures, the program has taken out disability insurance policies for both players, ensuring they are financially protected in case of injury. “These players have carried disability insurance throughout the season,” Sanders explained. “We want to make sure that if something were to happen, their draft stock and financial security are protected.”

Sanders highlighted the unprecedented nature of this coverage, emphasizing the importance of these players not only to the team but to the game itself. “We happen to have two players likely to be the first two picks of the NFL Draft,” Sanders remarked. “Their insurance coverage is the highest ever seen in college football, far exceeding what anyone has had before.”

As the Buffaloes gear up for their bowl game, Sanders is focused on discipline, preparation, and ensuring his team is ready to make history. The message is clear: Colorado isn’t just here to play—they’re here to win.
