Derby County goalie being eyed by Sunderland

Published

Reportedly on X, Sunderland has taken steps to put Derby County goalkeeper Lewis Ridd on trial.

Before the summer, Sunderland and other teams across the nation will be examining possible additions to their junior academies.

The academy of the Black Cats is among the most prolific in the nation. However, in order to expand their alternatives, they not only hire from within their own ranks but also from outside setups.

Lewis Ridd, the goalie, appears to be one player they are keeping an eye on.

Sunderland fielded a trialist in goal against Huddersfield Town’s youngsters on Wednesday and writing on X, reporter James Copley has confirmed it was Welsh talent Ridd. The 19-year-old is on the books at Derby County after joining from Ipswich Town last summer.

This season, Ridd has been on loan at Mickleover Sports. Their league is the Premier Division Central of the Southern League.

A fresh potential customer arriving?
It will take time to see if Ridd can convince Sunderland to offer him a contract during his trial period. During the first several years of his career, he studied at several reputable academies, Ipswich Town and Derby County.

Apart from his loan at Mickleover, Ridd has also played for Sudbury United, Bury Town, and Brightlingsea Regent, giving him some respectable senior experience as well.

It seems likely that he will be departing Derby in the summer given that he has been given permission to go on trial. If that’s the case, it offers him an opportunity to attract attention from other parties before his contract expires.
