The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed yet another defenceman as they try to beef up their blue line.
Toronto agreed to terms with defenceman Jani Hakanpää on a two-year, $3 million contract worth $1.5 million AAV, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported Monday.
The 32-year-old Hakanpaa is a powerful 6-foot-6, 225-pound defensive defenseman who finished the previous season with two goals and ten assists in 64 games with the Dallas Stars.
He missed the whole postseason as well as the team’s last 13 regular-season games due to a late-season knee ailment that necessitated arthroscopic surgery. There’s no set schedule for his recuperation.
On Monday, the Maple Leafs added two more significant players to their blue line: Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Brandon Tanev, who both agreed to expensive free agent contracts.
