Atkinson and the Cavaliers are finalizing contract details and are expected to reach a deal soon.

The Cavaliers had to choose between Atkinson and James Borrego, the associate head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans. Atkinson was chosen to replace J.B. Bickerstaff, who was fired after the Cavaliers lost in the second round to the Boston Celtics.

For the past three seasons, Atkinson has been an assistant under Steve Kerr in Golden State.

Two years ago, Atkinson initially accepted the head-coaching position with the Charlotte Hornets but later changed his mind and decided to stay with Golden State.

From 2016 to 2020, Atkinson was the head coach of the Brooklyn Nets.

In his first two seasons, the Nets had a record of 48-116. However, Atkinson managed to completely turn the franchise around in his third year, finishing the 2018-2019 season with a record of 42-40. Unfortunately, the Nets were eliminated by the Philadelphia 76ers in the first round.

The 2024-2025 season brings important roster decisions for the Cleveland Cavaliers. According to The Athletic, the Cavaliers plan to offer Donovan Mitchell a four-year, $209 million extension. If Mitchell doesn’t sign, the Cavaliers may trade him before the season starts. However, The Athletic’s report suggests that the Cavaliers are confident Mitchell will sign the extension.

If Mitchell signs, Darius Garland may request a trade. Cleveland would require multiple players and draft picks in a Garland trade, as he is a promising young star.

Another player to watch is Evan Mobley, whose offensive development has been limited. With the help of Atkinson, who transformed Brook Lopez into a consistent jump shooter, the Cavaliers hope to do the same with Mobley. At only 23 years old, Mobley has potential for growth.
