Diamondbacks Re-Sign Tyler Chatwood To Minor League Deal

The Arizona Diamondbacks have signed right-handed pitcher Tyler Chatwood to a minor league contract, as announced by their Triple-A affiliate. Chatwood previously played for the D-Backs in 2023, when he joined on a non-roster deal in August, making five relief appearances before his release. In the previous season, he also spent time in the Pittsburgh system, following a stint in Japan during the 2022 campaign.

With a decade of experience in the majors, Chatwood’s most recent MLB appearance was in 2021, where he split the season between the Blue Jays and Giants, pitching 32 innings of relief. Despite a solid strikeout rate of 26.2%, he struggled with control, evidenced by a high walk percentage of 14.5%, resulting in an earned run average of 5.63.

Chatwood’s career has been marked by inconsistency in throwing strikes, leading him to transition mostly to long relief since 2019, after initially starting as a pitcher. Despite his control issues, teams have been drawn to his mid-90s velocity and potential for strikeouts and ground balls. With a 4.20 ERA across eight Triple-A seasons, Chatwood provides valuable multi-inning relief depth for the Diamondbacks.
