Don’t take Lakers Coaching Job it is a death sentence and will eventually…

Since LeBron James joined the Lakers in 2018, the team has let go of three head coaches — Luke Walton, Frank Vogel, and Darvin Ham. Consequently, any coach stepping into the role faces constant risk of being replaced.

That’s precisely why former NBA player Channing Frye has advised his friend, JJ Redick, to avoid the position and explore other opportunities. Frye’s remarks followed reports suggesting Redick was a top contender to replace Ham as Lakers head coach.

“In all honesty, I see it as a no-win situation,” Frye told NBA TV recently. “I believe he’d be walking into a tough spot. While JJ certainly has coaching potential, accepting that position — it’s a big ask. You’re not just coaching in the NBA for the first time, but you’re also guiding Anthony Davis, D’Angelo Russell, and LeBron James. How do you handle crucial game moments? This isn’t a ‘learn as you go’ scenario. I wouldn’t recommend it.”

Frye then recommended Celtics assistant Sam Cassell or Pelicans assistant James Borrego for the Lakers position, highlighting their experience coaching veteran teams.

According to various reports, Redick, Cassell, and Borrego are among numerous candidates, including Heat’s Chris Quinn, Warriors’ Kenny Atkinson, Nuggets’ David Adelman, Timberwolves’ Micah Nori, and Mavericks’ Sean Sweeney. The Lakers are reportedly planning a thorough interviewing process before selecting Ham’s successor.

Former Heat player Udonis Haslem recently discouraged a Reddick-Lakers partnership, suggesting potential locker room tension due to Redick’s friendship with LeBron James, with whom he co-hosts a podcast.

Will Redick and the Lakers heed the advice? Redick, now a retired player turned analyst, has expressed his ambition to coach in the NBA.

“I have a desire to coach in the NBA. Life is about timing, life is about the right situation,” Redick mentioned on “The Pivot” podcast in April. “So, I can’t predict when or if it will happen. I take a lot of joy in my current work in the media space, and it’s important to me.”
