Dragons 2025 Roster Shake-Up: New Look and Key Players for Round 1

After a disappointing finish to the 2024 season, the St George Illawarra Dragons are entering 2025 with a roster overhaul that reflects Shane Flanagan’s mission to bring experience and consistency to the team. Falling short in the previous season, the Dragons lost control of their finals bid, culminating in four losses across the final five games. This year, Flanagan has recruited major talent, including Damien Cook, Valentine Holmes, and Clint Gutherson, adding new depth and bolstering the team’s veteran presence. However, the departure of former captain Ben Hunt has raised concerns, especially as the Dragons search for stability at halfback.

Flanagan’s recruitment strategy has focused on building a stronger core through experienced players. With Valentine Holmes reuniting with Flanagan and Damien Cook moving from South Sydney, the Dragons aim to fortify both their backline and their spine. The addition of Clint Gutherson is a bold move, shifting the versatile Tyrell Sloan from fullback to the wing.
