Dragons Target South Sydney Rabbitohs halfback as Potential Replacement for Ben Hunt
The St George Illawarra Dragons are making significant strides toward securing South Sydney Rabbitohs halfback Lachlan Ilias as their new playmaker, following the departure of Ben Hunt. Ilias, 24, has completed two medical assessments with the Dragons, increasing the likelihood of his move to the club. While he had been linked to other teams, including the Bulldogs, the Dragons appear to be the front-runners for the talented halfback’s signature.
Ilias has played 53 NRL games for South Sydney but missed a large portion of last season due to a leg injury. However, the Dragons are leaving no stone unturned in their efforts to secure him, conducting a final X-ray on Friday to confirm his fitness before finalizing the transfer. With the Rabbitohs already beginning pre-season training, the transfer could be confirmed as early as next week, allowing Ilias to make the switch to the Dragons and take up the pivotal number seven jersey.
The potential move comes after South Sydney’s signing of Super League halfback Lewis Dodd, which has left Ilias out of favor with the Rabbitohs. Ilias reportedly rejected any ideas of switching positions to hooker under coach Wayne Bennett, as he remains focused on his preferred role as halfback. This change of clubs could also bring a reunion with former teammate Damien Cook, with Ilias potentially partnering him in the playmaking role for the Dragons.
In addition to Ilias, the Dragons are exploring other halfback options, including Daniel Atkinson from the Sharks and Adam Doueihi from the Wests Tigers. Both players have also undergone medical assessments, but if Ilias finalizes his move, the Rabbitohs are expected to contribute a portion of his $500,000 contract to facilitate the deal. With the Dragons eager to bolster their squad for the upcoming season, securing Ilias would be a significant step toward rebuilding their team.
