Duke basketball receives terrible transfer portal news

The Duke Blue Devils reached the Elite Eight in the recent NCAA Tournament, marking their best finish under head coach Jon Scheyer. However, despite this achievement, the program is facing significant challenges heading into the next season due to numerous departures.

Expectedly, players like Kyle Filipowski and Jared McCain have declared for the upcoming 2024 NBA Draft. Additionally, the transfer portal has seen an exodus of players from the team in recent weeks. Jerem Roach, Mark Mitchell, TJ Power, Jaylen Blakes, Christian Reeves, and Jaden Schutt have all entered the transfer portal, with former top-20 recruit Sean Stewart joining them most recently.

Stewart’s decision to transfer is understandable given his limited playing time last season, but it further compounds the roster issues for Duke.

Currently, only two players, Tyrese Proctor and Caleb Foster, are set to return from last season’s roster, posing a significant challenge for the team’s success. However, Duke is known for producing one-and-done NBA talent, which may help mitigate the impact of these departures.

Duke is bringing in a promising recruiting class, including six high school recruits, with Cooper Flagg, Isaiah Evans, and Kon Knueppel among the notable five-star additions. Despite this influx of talent, coaching a roster with few experienced veterans will be a tough task for Jon Scheyer.
