According to multiple reports, the father of a prominent Philadelphia Eagles player was reportedly found in possession of a loaded firearm while driving in the Bronx. The New York Police Department discovered the weapon during a traffic stop involving Alibay Barkley at the intersection of 140th Street and Third Avenue in Mott Haven, as reported by Fox News on Thursday night, a day after the incident. It’s unclear whether there were other passengers in the vehicle during the stop. Barkley Sr., the father of former Giants running back Saquon Barkley, who spent six seasons playing in New York, may face charges of criminal possession of a weapon, according to Fox News.

Saquon Barkley, aged 27, earned NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors in 2018 and joined the Eagles as a free agent in March. Not much is known about Barkley’s father except that he was a boxer during Saquon’s upbringing and served time in jail, according to Essentially Sports. After his release, Barkley Sr. relocated his family from New York to Pennsylvania. During Saquon’s childhood, he faced homelessness while his father was incarcerated. Additionally, his brother Alibay Jr. was once drafted by the MLB’s Los Angeles Angels, and his great uncle is former UFC heavyweight Iran Barkley.

Earlier in the offseason, the Eagles signed Saquon Barkley to a three-year, $37.75 million contract, making him one of the highest-paid running backs in the NFL with an average annual salary of $12.583 million, per Spotrac.

Last season, Barkley fell just short of his fourth 1,000-yard rushing season, recording 962 yards and six touchdowns in 14 starts. In his final game with the Giants against the Eagles in Week 18, he contributed 97 scrimmage yards and two touchdowns in a 27-10 victory. Over his career, Barkley has amassed 865 yards (615 rushing, 250 receiving) and seven touchdowns in nine games against Philadelphia.

Selected as the No. 2 overall pick in the 2018 draft, Barkley earned two Pro Bowl selections and claimed the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year award during his time with the Giants. He currently ranks fourth in franchise history with 5,211 rushing yards from 74 starts.

Barkley steps in to fill the shoes of D’Andre Swift, who rushed for 1,049 yards in his lone season with the Eagles in 2023 before joining the Chicago Bears. Swift himself replaced Miles Sanders, who had a career-best 1,269 rushing yards for Philadelphia in 2022.

Reportedly, Barkley’s contract is front-loaded, featuring $25.5 million guaranteed with an $11.625 million signing bonus. Only $1.5 million of his $12 million base salary for the 2026 season is guaranteed.

During his college career at Penn State, Barkley was highly decorated, earning All-American honors and being named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year twice. Over three seasons from 2015 to 2017, he totaled 3,843 rushing yards and 43 touchdowns.
