Star guard Donovan Mitchell started strong, making his first two shots, but struggled afterward, only hitting 1 out of 10 attempts for the remainder of the game in Sunday’s significant loss to the Nuggets on the road. Mitchell’s performance may have been affected by a lingering knee issue that has hindered his explosiveness, compounded by the necessity of wearing a protective mask due to a nasal fracture.

Coach J.B. Bickerstaff acknowledged Mitchell’s determination to contribute despite his physical challenges, stating, “He wants to play and he wants to be out there with his teammates… but if you take time off it’s going to take some time to find your rhythm again.”

Mitchell lacked support from his backcourt partner Darius Garland, who struggled, scoring only five points on 2-of-8 shooting. One NBA scout noted that this might be Garland’s most challenging season since his rookie year, possibly influenced by a previous broken jaw. Despite frustrations evident after the loss, the Cavaliers are holding onto third place in the Eastern Conference, but are aware of the need to improve before the postseason.

76ers

Kelly Oubre’s impressive 32-point performance led the Sixers to victory against the Raptors, extending coach Nick Nurse’s unbeaten streak against his former team, which has now lost 13 consecutive games. Cameron Payne contributed 24 points, 14 of which came crucially after star guard Tyrese Maxey left the game due to injury.

Guard Kyle Lowry commended the team’s collective effort in supporting Maxey, emphasizing the irreplaceable role he plays. The Sixers’ success was further highlighted by their 3-0 record this season and 7-1 all-time record when making 20 or more 3-pointers.

The return of star center Joel Embiid is anticipated this week, providing a timely boost for the team as they prepare for the playoffs.

Raptors

Struggling to regain momentum, the Raptors have not held a lead since early in the fourth quarter of a loss to the Nets on March 25, resulting in a 13-game losing streak. Additionally, the injury-plagued Raptors have struggled within the Atlantic Division, boasting a 1-14 record, with one game against the Nets still remaining on April 10. Toronto has also faced challenges at home, losing seven consecutive games.

Coach Darko Rajakovic acknowledged the tough situation but emphasized the need for adaptability and resilience moving forward.
