Birmingham City and Cardiff City are at the center of a late refereeing change in the Sky Bet Championship, as Robert Madley has been replaced for their midweek encounter.

The two teams are set to face off at St Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park on Wednesday evening. Initially, Madley was designated to officiate the match, but there was a significant outcry from supporters due to the referee’s apparent allegiance to one of Birmingham City’s relegation rivals, Huddersfield Town.

The EFL has taken into account this affiliation concern and has appointed Sam Allison to oversee the proceedings at B9 instead. Assistant referees Greg Read and Daniel Leach, along with fourth official Andy Davies, are still scheduled for the Birmingham game. Meanwhile, Robert Madley will now officiate the Bristol City vs Blackburn Rovers match at Ashton Gate.

This isn’t the first time this season Birmingham City has experienced a last-minute change in officiating. Assistant James Wilson was replaced for the home fixture against Middlesbrough on March 12, following a similar fan uproar when Wilson was involved in a match away at Hull City where Birmingham City was denied a penalty for an apparent handball by Ozan Tufan.

The EFL’s decision to make adjustments in both instances may be aimed at alleviating pressure on their referees. With Birmingham City battling relegation, every game is crucial, resembling a cup final until the end of the season.
