SURPRISE, Arizona – A sigh of relief may be heard by the Texas Rangers following the unexpected departure of one of its young stars from Sunday’s spring training game.

After being struck in the left arm by a pitch, outfielder Evan Carter had to leave the game early.

X-rays later showed no broken bones.

That’s very good news considering the Rangers are already missing Corey Seager and Josh Jung due to injuries.

With just six hits combined, Texas and San Francisco battled to a scoreless draw on Sunday.

In preparation for returning to the rotation, pitcher Andrew Heaney tossed two scoreless innings in his first spring game.

Second baseman Marcus Semien spoke with FOX 4’s Mike Doocy following the game about his intention to encourage young Black men to pursue baseball during the off-season.

“You were in front of a press conference for the Swingman Classic, which included institutions and colleges with a predominantly Black student body. You speak out a lot about how more Black players are needed in baseball. Why, in your opinion, is the proportion currently low? Doocy inquired.

“When you’re a child, you see the athletes on TV. I watched Barry Bonds, myself. I fell in love with the game because he was a guy who looked like me. For the children in the DFW metroplex, I want to be that. “I hope they start loving baseball when they watch it and see a second baseman who can play the position well,” he stated.

Semien is known as the Iron Man because of his consistent routine and work ethic.

He said that does not change during the off-season and he takes minimal time off.

“Well, I just wanted to stay on schedule, you know,” he said. “Even in the off-season I’m the same way when I’m taking my kids to school and making breakfast for them. The routine helps center me. For me in baseball, I always felt I wasn’t as talented as everybody else so I thought if I can perfect my routine that will make me more confident when I get out there.”

Semien has only missed one regular-season game out of 485 since 2021.

On Monday, the Rangers will take on the Chicago White Sox.
