The acclaimed movie “Ford v Ferrari” depicts the real-life tale of a group of car engineers, led by Shelby Carroll and hired by Henry Ford II, tasked with crafting a racing vehicle capable of outperforming Scuderia Ferrari, the renowned Italian racing team, during the 1960s.

Released in 2019, this biographical sports drama, directed by James Mangold and written by Jez Butterworth, John-Henry Butterworth, and Jason Keller, features Matt Damon portraying Carroll, a celebrated automotive designer and former professional racer. Carroll’s racing career spanned eight years, from 1952 to 1960, until health issues forced him into retirement, yet his passion for racing persisted.

The movie “Ford v Ferrari” opens with Ford commissioning Carroll and his team to engineer a car capable of defeating Ferrari’s dominant racing team at the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans, a race the Italians had historically ruled. Carroll, a previous winner of the Le Mans in 1959, enlists the expertise of Ken Miles (portrayed by Christian Bale) to pilot the newly crafted Ford GT40 Mk II. In the end, Ford and Shelby triumph at the 1966 Le Mans, although Miles finishes second behind Bruce McLaren in a thrilling three-car photo finish.

Tragically, as depicted in the film’s conclusion, Ken Miles meets his demise a few months after the 1966 Le Mans while test-driving the Ford J-car at California’s Riverside International Raceway. During the test run, the car unexpectedly flips, ejecting Miles, who tragically succumbs to the impact of the crash. Despite this devastating loss, Carroll Shelby, after grieving the loss of his friend, continues collaborating with Ford, striving to rectify the flaws in their previous models.
