Antonio Pierce, the former New York Giants linebacker instrumental in the team’s 2007 Super Bowl victory, is set to become the permanent head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders. He assumed the interim head coaching role midway through the previous season after Josh McDaniels’ dismissal. While serving as interim head coach, Pierce, a key figure in the Raiders’ defensive staff, guided the team to a 5-4 record, helping them finish 8-9 and secure second place in the AFC West—an impressive turnaround from their struggles under McDaniels.
Pierce, known for his leadership both on and off the field, had previously earned acclaim as the Giants’ defensive co-captain. His intelligence, instincts, and leadership qualities were praised by former Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. During his time with the Giants, Pierce played a pivotal role in their Super Bowl XLII victory, orchestrating memorable off-field moments, such as the team’s all-black dress code for their arrival in Phoenix, Arizona.

Drawing on his successful stint with the Giants, Pierce applied his experiences and relationships when stepping into the interim head coaching role with the Raiders. Notably, he sought advice from his former head coach, Tom Coughlin, who coached the Giants during their championship season in 2007. Despite interest from other teams, including the Tennessee Titans and Atlanta Falcons, Pierce’s commitment to the Raiders was solidified when he secured the permanent head coaching position.
Ironically, Pierce’s first victory as interim head coach came against his former team, the Giants, in a decisive 30-6 win. With nine seasons of playing experience and a Pro Bowl selection in 2006 with the Giants, Pierce’s coaching potential has attracted attention. The Giants were reportedly considering him for their vacant defensive coordinator role if the Raiders didn’t retain him, and if head coaching opportunities did not materialize elsewhere.
