The Pittsburgh Steelers are optimistic about having Kenny Pickett and Mason Rudolph compete for the starting quarterback position in 2023. However, Coach Mike Tomlin is aware that Rudolph is set to become a free agent, recognizing the unpredictable nature of the NFL’s business dynamics. This uncertainty may prompt the Steelers to consider alternative options to compete with Pickett in the upcoming summer. While expressing his desire for Rudolph to return to the team in 2024, Tomlin acknowledges the reality of free agency and the potential for various outcomes, stating, “It is. But he is a free agent, and it is free agency, so we’ll see where that leads us.”

In the event that Rudolph chooses to sign with another team, the Steelers will explore alternative options, either through free agency or the NFL Draft. Mike Tomlin is actively researching the upcoming class of quarterbacks to ensure that the team doesn’t overlook any potential opportunities at the position. Expressing his passion for personnel matters, Tomlin stated, “I always do. You know, I’m a personnel buff. I don’t think you can be in this profession and not be into personnel, not have knowledge of that play for you, play against you, particularly at the quarterback position. I enjoy it.” With the 20th pick in the NFL Draft, the Steelers have been linked to prospects like Bo Nix from Oregon and Jayden Daniels from LSU in various mock drafts. Additionally, Steelers’ analyst Nick Martin identified a later-round option that he believes the team could draft without utilizing one of their top picks.
