The Polynesian Bowl holds significant importance in the annual recruiting cycle for Tennessee fans. In 2023, the game featured the participation of five-star quarterback Nico Iamaleava, who later joined the team in Knoxville for classes and practice in January. Now, Tennessee is sending five 2024 signees to the Polynesian Bowl, following the tradition of having several All-Americans participate.

The group includes five-star edge rusher Jordan Ross, five-star wide receiver Mike Matthews, four-star quarterback Jake Merklinger, four-star offensive tackle Bennett Warren, and four-star inside linebacker Edwin Spillman. While Ross, Matthews, and Warren have already taken part in other All-American events, they have chosen to travel to Honolulu, Hawaii, for the Polynesian Bowl.

Merklinger is expected to serve as the backup quarterback next season, as the coaching staff has been unable to secure a transfer portal quarterback willing to sit behind Iamaleava. On the other hand, Spillman, a long-time Tennessee lean who opted for the Vols over Ohio State, hails from the successful program at Lipscomb Academy. His high school performance showcased traits that could translate well into Tennessee’s defense. The Polynesian Bowl presents numerous reasons for excitement among the Vols and their fans.
