After only six starts with the team, the Las Vegas Raiders have decided to part ways with Jimmy Garoppolo. Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported on March 12 that the team intends to release the quarterback in the near future.

The decision by the Raiders to cut ties with Jimmy Garoppolo doesn’t come as a surprise, especially in light of his recent suspension for violating the league’s Performance Enhancing Substances Policy. Despite signing a lucrative three-year, $72.75 million contract with Las Vegas last season, Garoppolo’s tenure with the team was marred by injuries and underperformance.

Raiders Make Final Decision on QB Jimmy Garoppolo

The quarterback struggled with injuries early on and was eventually benched in favor of Aidan O’Connell. Now, with Josh McDaniels no longer serving as head coach, Garoppolo’s fit within the team’s system has further diminished. By releasing him, the Raiders will free up nearly $11.3 million in salary cap space, as they aim to overhaul their quarterback room.

Brian Hoyer, another quarterback on the roster, is also being cut, indicating a significant restructuring within the team. While Garoppolo was once viewed as a viable starter, his recurring injury issues have raised doubts about his long-term reliability. With the acquisition of Gardner Minshew, the Raiders have opted to move on from Garoppolo, leaving his future in the league uncertain. It remains to be seen where he will land next.

Which Teams Could Be Interested in Jimmy Garoppolo?

The decision by the Raiders to move on from Jimmy Garoppolo doesn’t bode well for his value in the NFL, especially considering the team’s lack of a set starting quarterback at the moment. Despite leading the San Francisco 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance, Garoppolo’s stock has taken a hit, particularly after being benched last season while leading the league in interceptions.

While it’s unlikely that Garoppolo will be signed as an unquestioned starter this offseason, there are still potential suitors for his services. The Minnesota Vikings, who recently signed Sam Darnold but remain uncertain about their starting quarterback situation, could be a team to watch. Additionally, a reunion with the New England Patriots or serving as a backup to Tua Tagovailoa with the Miami Dolphins may also be viable options for Garoppolo.

As for Aidan O’Connell, despite his promising performance last season, the Raiders don’t seem confident in him as a starting option. Gardner Minshew, who was recently acquired by the team, is favored to start, given his lucrative contract. However, O’Connell could still have a chance to compete for the starting role, especially if head coach Antonio Pierce has a soft spot for him.

Looking ahead to the draft, the Raiders may also consider selecting a quarterback early, further complicating the quarterback situation heading into the 2024 season. As training camp approaches, it’s uncertain who will emerge as the team’s starting quarterback, but competition is likely to be fierce.
