The offensive and defensive coordinators for the new Panthers coach are in place.

Dell McGee was formally introduced by University as the Georgia State football coach on Monday.

According to Matt Zentiz of 24/7 Sports, McGgee did not waste any time in appointing Jim Chaney and Kevin Sherrer as coordinators for Georgia State football.

“Sources tell @chris_hummer and me for@247Sports that Dell McGee is expected to appoint Jim Chaney as his offensive coordinator at Georgia State and Kevin Sherrer as his defensive coordinator.” Chaney has worked as an OC in states such as Tennessee, Georgia, and Arkansas. Sherrer has experience with the New York Giants, Georgia Tech, Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee.

Shawn Elliott’s departure from Georgia State to accept an unexpected job offer left the football program in need of a new head coach.

McGee is ideal for Georgia State football because of his ties to the area. He was born in Columbus, Georgia, and attended Kendrick High School in Georgia.

McGee coached at two Georgia high schools before spending a season at Auburn following brief stints in the NFL and the Arena Football League. After that, he moved to Georgia Southern, where he spent 2014–2015. In 2015, he was even named head coach in an acting capacity. After thereafter, he became an assistant head coach and running backs coach for the Georgia Bulldogs, where he has been employed since 2016. As a result, he is well-known in the state and has prior experience working under Kirby Smart.

Georgia State football suspended spring practice in search of a new head coach after Elliott left for South Carolina. The Panthers made the somewhat unconventional decision to identify strength coach Mike Sirignano as the interim coach at first.
