Former Bills offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey Talks About Being Fired in Buffalo
The Buffalo Bills had a great start to the 2023 NFL season before things started to go south. Josh Allen, the quarterback for the Bills, seems to have lost his explosive spark. The Bills benched offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey with the team sitting at 5-5.
Given that the Bills offense was a disorganized disaster for the majority of the season, the decision wasn’t too surprising. After the Bills appointed Joe Brady to temporary offensive coordinator, nobody knew what to anticipate, yet the team quickly became successful. Buffalo finished the season 7-2 under Brady.
On Monday, February 5, he spoke to the media in his capacity as the new offensive coordinator of the Cleveland Browns and revealed his reasons for leaving. He laid the blame firmly on Sean McDermott, even if he did not mention him by name.
“Look, I have to move on from that because the head coach ultimately decided to make a change,” Dorsey remarked. “I’m incredibly happy to be here and am concentrating more on this opportunity than what transpired there.” This is consistent with what McDermott said to reporters on November 14, the day Dorsey was let go. McDermott declared, “I made this decision and I made it alone.”
After joining the Browns on January 28, Dorsey said he took the rest of the NFL season to think back on his time in Buffalo. One of the main benefits, according to Dorsey, was that it allowed him to take some time to reflect on his work and take stock of it. “Now that I could see what we were doing practically and how we were using our staff, I could really assess what we were doing,” he said.
“When I did, I thought we were accomplishing a lot of very fantastic things. There are always moments when you think, “Hey, maybe this is how I would do this going forward.”
Josh Allen, the quarterback for the Bills, felt culpable for Ken Dorsey’s firing.
In conversation with reporters
Allen looked devastated the day Dorsey was let go. “Dorsey is my favorite. He is one of the good ones among humans. Allen also said that he felt bad about the coordinator’s dismissal.
“Without a doubt,” Allen responded when asked if Dorsey would still be employed if the offense performed better. “That really gets to me personally. It aches. Witnessing someone you love go through anything like that hurts a great deal.
“I believe that a large portion of my professional success is due to him. He has had a major role in that. I regret seeing him go. The truth is that we probably won’t need to make a move like that if we perform better as a team.
He has played a significant role in our work over the past few years. I understand Coach McDermott’s reasoning for doing this after our conversation. It’s regrettable. However, we still have Sunday to play a division opponent, so there is still time to turn things around.
