Zach Ertz, a former tight end for the Philadelphia Eagles and Super Bowl winner, has signed to terms with the Washington Commanders, a league source confirmed to Heavy.
The 33-year-old Ertz was selected by the Eagles in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft. He later won a Super Bowl ring during Philadelphia’s 2017 season-ending triumph over the New England Patriots.
Ertz played for the Eagles for nine seasons, making three visits to the Pro Bowl. During that time, he caught 579 receptions for 6,267 yards and 38 touchdowns. He was dealt to the Arizona Cardinals before to the 2021 NFL trade deadline.
On November 30, 2023, Ertz asked for and received his release from the Cardinals. He then signed with the practice squad of the Detroit Lions ahead of the NFL Playoffs. Ertz, though, did not play in any of the Lions’ postseason contests.
What Zach Ertz Brings to The Commanders Landing with the Commanders may provide Ertz the chance to contend for an early 2024 starting position.
No tight end for Washington exceeded 200 yards in a single season the previous year. John Bates, who did not score a touchdown, finished as the Commanders’ most productive tight end, catching 19 of his 28 targets for 151 yards.
In 2024, Washington is expected to select second overall in the NFL draft, and it is quite likely that the Commanders will use that pick to acquire a franchise quarterback. For a rookie quarterback, Ertz is the kind of player who can provide stability and support.
Ertz is one year removed from Cardinals quarterbacks registering a 100.9 passing rating while attempting to find him in the 2022 season, as Pro Football Focus notes.
Howie Roseman of the Eagles has big plans for 2024.
Howie Roseman, general manager of the Eagles, is aware of the urgency of moving past the 2023 season’s dismal conclusion.
Roseman has an immediate responsibility to assemble a team that can contend for Super Bowls and return to the NFC’s elite echelons, especially with quarterback Jalen Hurts about to turn 26.
At the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, Roseman told reporters, “We know what we have on this roster.” It’s thrilling to know that we have a chance to bolster our current roster with some truly excellent players.
Without a doubt, we have a lot of work ahead of us. That’s how the National Football League operates. We have our job cut out for us because the previous season didn’t end how we had hoped, and I wouldn’t want any other group to work with me to accomplish this.
Roseman and the Eagles appear ready to keep developing around Hurts and a youthful core of players selected in recent drafts who are now assuming prominent roles, like center Cam Jurgens, defensive linemen Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis, among others. The team is currently projected to have upwards of $39.6 million in cap space.
“We are in the talent-acquisition mode and are looking forward, so we are asking ourselves, ‘How can we get better there?'” with reference to each position, according to Roseman. We’re going to consider all of our building options. We’re going to use the draft, trades, and free agents aggressively. We’re thrilled with the signings we’ve completed.
We’re off to a new start with our new coaches. We are viewing things that way, and we are excited about this moment. Although it’s a difficult competition, we are aware of our goals.
