Gary Rowett commended the influence of St Andrew’s following Birmingham City’s resounding victory over Coventry City, a win that dealt a significant blow to Coventry’s playoff aspirations and bolstered Birmingham’s chances of avoiding relegation. With goals from Bobby Thomas (own goal), Ivan Sunjic, and Jay Stansfield, the hosts secured a 3-0 win in front of nearly 27,000 enthusiastic fans.

Rowett highlighted the remarkable support from the Bluenoses, noting, “It’s been no surprise we’ve had five full houses this season and we’ve won [all] five games.” He praised the fans’ commitment, particularly after a midweek fixture, stating, “If that doesn’t show the power of our fanbase then nothing else will… It’s nice for us to reward that loyalty with a performance that had a similar edge about it.”

Regarding team selection, Rowett acknowledged making compromises in some positions but emphasized the importance of fielding a team that would give their all. The result, he noted, was a significant performance, with the team displaying determination and limiting Coventry’s opportunities despite their quality.

Rowett opted to include Sunjic, Keshi Anderson, and Tyler Roberts in the starting lineup, and all three players made significant contributions to the team’s success. Anderson’s shot, which turned into a cross, deflected off Thomas for the opening goal, while Sunjic not only scored but also disrupted Coventry’s midfield. Roberts, on the other hand, played a key role in creating two goals with his precise passes.

Reflecting on the trio’s performance, Rowett remarked, “All three have probably felt like they haven’t had as many opportunities as they would like… I felt as though they have maybe deserved a chance and I felt that it was the right time to make those changes. We tweaked a few things within the formation and within the starting lineup.”

He also praised Anderson’s performance, highlighting his unselfish play and quality decision-making on the ball.

Rowett also commended Ashley Cole for his role in Birmingham City’s rare set-piece goal. After Paik Seung-ho’s delivery was partially cleared by Coventry, Sunjic struck the ball past Brad Collins to score.

Rowett expressed his satisfaction for Cole and the team, mentioning that they dedicate significant effort to set pieces despite not being the tallest team. He noted that it was a second-phase set piece that resulted in Sunjic’s goal, and Cole celebrated the achievement with a little dance.
