SAN FRANCISCO: After shooting a one-under-par, 839 total on Saturday night at TPC Harding Park, the No. 22 Georgia men’s golf team won The Goodwin event, earning them their second tournament title of the year.
Georgia shot the second-lowest round of the competition with a third-round score of five under 275. In its inaugural year of competition, the Bulldogs defeated nine teams ranked in the top 50 to win the event. For the sixth time in the previous six years, the program has won multiple tournaments in a season after taking home the Puerto Rico Classic in February.
Georgia was one stroke ahead of Utah in second place. With a four-over, 844 total, host team No. 44 Stanford ended in third place. No. 8 Tennessee and No. 15 Georgia Tech followed in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
Ben van Wyk, who finished the weekend in third place, set the pace for the squad. The graduate had his best finish of the year and his fourth top-five finish with a three-under, 207. Van Wyk had three birdies and an eagle on the course’s two par five holes, finishing with the second-best par five average of the competition (4.17).
On Saturday, Buck Brumlow shot two under to finish t-11, which was the lowest score on the squad. With 41 pars, the youngster tied for the second-highest total in the field. During the competition, Brumlow was one of eight players to card an eagle; he did so on hole number 16 in the third round. Brumlow and van Wyk shot eagles, making Georgia the only team with multiple players who did so.
Alongside Brumlow, Connor Creasy shot a t-11 at two under, 210. Graduate student Creasy tied for sixth place out of 168 players this weekend with 11 birdies over 54 holes. Caleb Manuel, a senior, participated solo and placed t-33 at three over. Beck Burnette finished the competition at t-55 individually with a one-under-69 score.
Georgia’s regular season will conclude on April 7-9 at the Calusa Cup, which is being hosted by Iowa at the Calusa Pines Golf Club in Naples, Florida.
