Giants news, 2/23: Xavier McKinney, Mike Onwenu, Jeremiah claims the team has pieces to trade up for a quarterback, and more headlines

Fans of the New York Giants, good morning!

Giants moving up to select a quarterback who is “very much in play” at number six
During a draft conference call on Thursday, well-connected NFL Network insider Daniel Jeremiah stated that the Giants are “very much in play” to move from No. 6 to No. 3, which would guarantee them one of the top three quarterbacks in the draft class.

The New England Patriots’ current choice, No. 3, was moved from No. 6 to No. 3 in 2018. This action set a precedent. In order to move up and choose Sam Darnold that year, the New York Jets gave the Indianapolis Colts three second-round picks (two in 2018 and one in 2019).
Coincidentally, the Giants own second-round picks in 2025 and 39 and 47 in Round 2 this year that they may offer in exchange for a higher pick.

It’s a high cost to incur. There’s a tiny premium there, Jeremiah remarked. “With the ammunition they have, you could get up to three and finish that.” Not that I would rule anything out.

NFL free agency officially begins on Monday, when the Scouting Combine in Indianapolis draws players from all over the league.

Yes, two days after the official negotiating window opens on March 13, that is when the free agency signing period officially begins. However, team officials and players’ agents in Indianapolis will presumably start laying the foundation for deals that will be more formally formalized starting on March 11.
