Giants: Three Right Tackles Worth Pursuing in Free Agency.

on

The New York Giants are facing the urgent need to strengthen their offensive line after conceding the highest number of sacks in the league, totaling 85 in 2023. The uncertainty surrounding the performance of Evan Neal, the Giants’ 2022 first-round pick, has put the right tackle position in question.

As the offseason approaches, Neal’s position is far from secure, especially with a robust market of right tackles anticipated to be available in free agency. The Giants are considering several options to enhance the position and create competition for Neal.

One potential standout is Mike Onwenu, the New England Patriots’ offensive tackle, expected to become a free agent. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports that Onwenu will be among the top offensive linemen available. His connection with the Giants’ recently appointed offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo, who coached him during his first two seasons in New England, makes him a priority target. In 2023, Onwenu demonstrated versatility by starting 15 games at right tackle and right guard, allowing only three sacks and 23 total pressures.

Another option for the Giants is Jermain Eluemunor, who flourished under Bricillo’s guidance during his tenure with the Las Vegas Raiders from 2022 to 2023. Eluemunor, a right tackle, allowed only six sacks and 28 pressures for the Raiders. Reuniting with his former coach in New York could make him an affordable starting option in free agency.

For a potentially impactful move, the Giants might consider Jonah Williams, a former first-round pick who spent the 2023 season as the Cincinnati Bengals’ right tackle. Despite surrendering eight sacks and 41 total pressures, Williams, known for his positional versatility, could offer quality depth at left tackle in addition to competing for the starting right tackle spot alongside Neal. A change of scenery might be the catalyst for Williams to rebound and elevate his performance. The Giants could benefit from his experience and versatility in shoring up the offensive line.
