In Tuesday night’s matchup between Eastern Conference playoff contenders, the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the visiting Boston Bruins 4-1 by scoring two goals in the second and two more in the third.

Carolina (50-22-7, 107 points) led by Andrei Svechnikov, who scored a goal and provided an assist. With this victory, Carolina moved into a tie with Boston for second place in the conference standings.

The Hurricanes’ offensive line was completed by Teuvo Teravainen, Jake Guentzel, Seth Jarvis, and Jaccob Slavin, who also contributed two assists.

22 shots were denied by Pyotr Kochetkov in Carolina’s net.

For the Bruins (46-18-15, 107 points), Jeremy Swayman made 22 stops in addition to Charlie McAvoy’s lone goal.

In addition to stopping three Boston power plays and scoring a short-handed goal of their own, Carolina held a 26–23 shooting lead.

It was a scoreless game until the second quarter at 10:55. Svechnikov stole the puck from the right corner and stuffed it into the upper left corner of Swayman’s net to complete a wraparound “Michigan” goal.

At 13:05, Teravainen then doubled the Hurricanes’ lead by getting the final touch on a puck that was racing towards the net. The puck rebounded back to the top of the crease after Slavin’s shot from above the left circle, where Svechnikov got it to Teravainen, who redirected it five holes on the Boston goalie.

With 3:04 remaining before the second break, McAvoy tore a one-timer past Kochetkov from the left circle, cutting the hosts’ deficit in half. The Boston defenseman’s goal was his second in a row of games.

After Pavel Zacha attempted to clear, Guentzel’s shot from the left crease rebounded in off Swayman, giving Carolina another fortunate bounce that made the score 3-1.

At 13:22, Jarvis scored a short-handed breakaway goal after sprinting up the left flank to give the Hurricanes a 4-1 lead.

After a rough first period finished without a goal, Martin Necas of Carolina’s first attempt took an odd bounce past Swayman, but the goal was disallowed because it did not cross the goal line completely.
