Nebraska has formally secured another significant acquisition from the transfer portal in the form of Gavin Griffiths from Rutgers.

Nebraska officially announced the addition of Rutgers guard Gavin Griffiths on Wednesday. Griffiths, a 6-foot-8, 193-pound guard from Simsbury, Conn., played at Rutgers last season and will have three seasons of eligibility remaining.

As a top-50 recruit out of high school, Griffiths brings size and shooting ability to the Huskers, ranking third among Big Ten freshmen in 3-pointers during the 2023-24 season, according to CBB Reference.

Nebraska Coach Fred Hoiberg expressed confidence in Griffiths’ potential to excel on the Husker roster, emphasizing his elite shooting and versatility. Hoiberg stated, “Gavin is an elite shooter with deep range…His skillset fits what we are looking for.” Hoiberg also highlighted Griffiths’ ball-handling ability, length, and athleticism, which provide flexibility and positional size in the lineup.

During the 2023-24 campaign, Griffiths played in all 32 games for Rutgers, averaging 5.8 points and 2.2 rebounds per game while playing just under 18 minutes per contest. He made significant contributions off the bench, ranking second on the team with 31 3-pointers and third in blocked shots with 13. Griffiths showcased his improvement towards the end of the season, averaging 11.3 points and 3.5 rebounds per game over Rutgers’ final four contests, shooting 38 percent from 3-point range. Notable performances included scoring 14 points against Wisconsin, 10 against Nebraska, and a team-high 16 in a start against Maryland in the Big Ten Tournament.

As a true freshman, Griffiths recorded seven double-figure scoring games, including a standout 25-point performance against Boston University, where he shot 9-of-15 from the field and made three 3-pointers. He demonstrated consistency in rebounding, grabbing at least three rebounds in each of Rutgers’ final seven games, with a season-high six rebounds against No. 2 Purdue.
