Sixty years after they first met, AFL veteran David Parkin’s lasting bond with former classmates

David Parkin, in his fourth season as a member of the Hawthorn Football Club in 1964, was considered a tough and brave “back-pocket specialist.”

But Parkin remembers being “terrified” when he entered a primary school that same year to start his first teaching position.

Back then, football players in the VFL (now the AFL) combined their professional football careers with full-time jobs.

Following his graduation from Toorak Teachers College, Parkin, 21, was assigned to Monbulk Primary School, located in a tiny rural village in the verdant hills to the east of Melbourne. He was given a class of forty-eight third-graders, roughly twice the size of most classes these days.
